Originally rated at around 80 horsepower, the vehicle now sits on a custom-built frame, prepared by a previous owner for a street rod conversion. The front end features a Mustang II setup with coil-over shocks, while the rear is built around a Dana 44 axle with leaf springs. The body, wheels, and overall aesthetic remain stock, and the owner intends to preserve that classic look while transforming what lies beneath.
The vehicle is described as being in very good condition, with no rust, and has been in the owner’s hands for the past decade. A previous attempt at an EV conversion was started, but the complexity of programming the UQM inverter led the owner to seek a more structured and supported approach.
The vision for this build is clear: create a reliable, everyday electric driver that stays true to the character of the original car while benefiting from modern performance and simplicity. The target is a rear-wheel-drive setup delivering approximately 100 to 150 horsepower, with a top speed around 70 mph and a range between 110 and 130 miles. Charging will primarily take place at home, with overnight charging.
What makes this project particularly compelling is the owner's level of involvement. This will be a hands-on build, with the owner seeking virtual training and guidance along the way. The goal is not only to complete the build but to fully understand it.
The scope of the project is focused on building a solid, roadworthy EV platform first. While the car already benefits from a strong rolling chassis, additional systems such as power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning are being considered to improve drivability and comfort. Other elements like paint, bodywork, interior, and 12V systems are already planned separately, allowing the EV conversion to remain focused and efficient.
