1979 Volkswagen Transporter T2
This 1979 Volkswagen T2 Transporter is Daniel’s first car which he bought at age 16. He purchased the van from his brother in 2000 and drove it until 2009 when it became necessary to use starting fluid to get it running.
This 1979 Volkswagen T2 Transporter is Daniel’s first car which he bought at age 16. He purchased the van from his brother in 2000 and drove it until 2009 when it became necessary to use starting fluid to get it running. In 2014 he left Utah and brought his van to Washington State where it has been parked since. Now he would like it to become his daily commuter again.
The flat-four has been already replaced once and is still in place along with a four-speed manual gearbox.
No recent restoration has been conducted on the van by Daniel. Odometer shows 26,547 miles, but according to him, it’s rolled over at least once. Built between 1968 and 1979, this Microbus is one of the last T2 editions. Vehicle equipment is very basic with heating but no power steering or AC. Daniel would be interested in upgrading the van with power steering and AC. His priorities at this point is “getting him back on the road”.
Daniel is ready to participate physically in the restoration. He would upgrade the brakes, wheels and tires himself, then ship the vehicle to the shop for the upgrade of the suspension and the EV conversion.
Ultimately this van will need body work, paint job, and interior upgrade. This work could be done later after the conversion. Daniel will consider all proposals, with or without exterior/interior upgrades.
Daniel’s expectations are realistic and respectful of the spirit of the VW buses. He would use it every day in the city as daily commuter. He expects it to be just a bit more powerful than before with a top speed of 70mph.
The curb weight is 2,535 lbs with a reasonable expected range of 90-110 miles. Charging at home would mostly happen at night in less than 7 hours of charge after full discharge. One Level 2 charging station is also needed.
Daniel has no preference for motors or batteries. He would like to keep the four-speed manual transaxle, but would be open to direct drive or other transmission options.
No towing requirements.
