The vehicle is powered by a 2.0L engine coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox. While it is in good condition and runs well, it is unable to pass the smog test, hence Clive’s decision to convert it to electric. Clive prefers a hands-off approach to the process—he will ship the car to a qualified EV conversion specialist in California or a neighboring state

This Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce has accompanied its owner, Clive, on an incredible journey. Originally purchased in Vancouver, Canada, in 1997, the car was shipped in 2000 to England where it underwent a full interior and exterior restoration. In 2005, it was relocated to Switzerland, where it was driven weekly before being transported to San Rafael, California, in 2021, where it has been stored ever since.

The vehicle is powered by a 2.0L engine coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox. While it is in good condition and runs well, it is unable to pass the smog test, hence Clive’s decision to convert it to electric.

The Spider is equipped with basic features, including heating but no power steering or air conditioning. With 120,000 km (74,564 miles) on the odometer, no recent restorations have been performed, nor are any required aside from equipment necessary for the EV conversion. Clive prefers to maintain the classic analog gauges, with a simple BMS display integrated into the dashboard (or in the glove box).

His expectations for the conversion are practical and in line with the car’s original character with a top speed of 100 mph, and a range of 80 miles. Post-conversion, the car will primarily be used for city driving, with overnight charging at home.

Clive prefers a hands-off approach to the process—he will ship the car to a qualified EV conversion specialist in California or a neighboring state. While he has no specific preferences for motors or batteries, he is inclined to retain the five-speed manual transaxle but remains open to direct-drive or alternative transmission options. There are no towing requirements for this project.
