Few cars symbolize the future quite like the DeLorean. This 1981 DMC DeLorean, with its unmistakable stainless-steel body and timeless silhouette, is being thoughtfully reimagined for a new era—one where iconic design meets modern electric performance and everyday usability.
This Californian low-mileage example shows just over 7,400 miles and has been carefully preserved through only two owners. Long regarded as a collectible and driven sparingly, the car is now intended to become something more: a true daily driver that can be enjoyed regularly without sacrificing its character, presence, or originality. The vehicle runs and presents exceptionally well, making it an ideal foundation for a high-quality electric conversion.

The objective of this project is to replace the original V6 drivetrain with a modern electric powertrain while preserving the car’s rear-wheel-drive layout. Performance is expected to exceed the original slightly, improving drivability and responsiveness without overwhelming the chassis. The target is a top speed of approximately 90 mph and an estimated 150–170 miles of range, ensuring the car is fully capable of real-world use, from daily commuting to weekend drives.
Tesla Battery and motor solutions are being considered, with an emphasis on balance, refinement, and reliability rather than outright power. Charging will happen at home, supported by a dedicated charging station, allowing convenient 4–7 hour charging sessions.
The transformation extends beyond the drivetrain. Brake upgrades are planned to match the vehicle’s new performance, while suspension and wheel improvements will be evaluated to enhance safety and comfort. Inside, the interior will be refreshed with a clear design philosophy: maintaining the DeLorean’s iconic button-and-knob aesthetic while upgrading materials, ergonomics, and functionality—without resorting to oversized LCD screens or touch-heavy interfaces.
This project is about more than electrification. It is about future-proofing an icon, allowing a car once seen as a vision of tomorrow to finally live up to that promise—quiet, reliable, engaging, and ready to be driven every day. The result will be a DeLorean that remains instantly recognizable, unmistakably special, and fully prepared for the next generation of drivers.
