1983 Chevrolet Scottsdale

James’ brother bought this 1983 Chevrolet Scottsdale in 2018 before he gave it to him for EV conversion. It is powered by a 250-cid inline 6 coupled with a 3-speed manual transmission (stuck in first gear). There has been no restoration or alterations, and it is free of rust. According to James, it’s in pretty good condition. The odometer shows 109364 miles, and the truck weighs 3,000 lbs. The Scottsdale is located in Redmond, Oregon.

The truck has front disc and rear drum brakes. It currently has AC, but no AC or climate control options will be necessary to keep costs down.
James will perform the conversion himself. He needs training (virtual or in the Bay area) and support from the parts provider(s). This family project will also most likely involve James' brother and daughter.
James has no preference for the motor, although he has noticed an important difference in price between the Netgain motor and the Nissan Leaf motor kit. Therefore, the Nissan Leaf motor may be his best option, although he knows its nominal voltage will result in a larger battery pack than required to run the Netgain. Both options will be considered.
He expects a range of 50-70 miles and whatever horsepower/ torque the Nissan motor will give. Charging will be done at home overnight.
He wants the truck to be less powerful than today and expects a very low top speed of 40mph. “I just want a cheap and fun EV truck to drive to Home Depot and maybe for my kids to fool around in!” Used parts would be preferable with interest and a review of available warranties.
There are no towing requirements.
