1997 Porsche Boxster
John wants to swap the 911 engine for a Tesla motor. With the car's curb weight of only 2,800 lbs, he expects over 350 hp and 350 Lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 120 mph. He wants to charge fast and have at least 100 miles of range between each charge.
This 1997 Porsche Boxster is located in Twin Falls, Idaho, and its stock 2.5L engine has already been swapped for a 911 3.4L engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission. John, the owner, says “This was my first track car, so it has upgraded engine, brakes, wheels, tires, cooling, and suspension.” The car was purchased in 2002 and is reported to be in good condition with no rust.
John is an experienced DIYer who has converted a 1979 Yamaha motorcycle to an electric 20-hp permanent magnet motor using Nissan Leaf modules and a Chargery BMS.
His desire is to build a new version of the Boxter with a more powerful EV drive train. The Tesla Swap Package is preferred, incorporating a used Tesla LDU or a Tesla Model 3 motor with repurposed/tested Tesla battery modules under warranty.
The car is equipped with both electric power steering and AC, but John is not interested in keeping AC; only power steering will require the installation of an electric power steering pump. John plans on restoring the interior after the electric conversion. Needless to say, there are no towing requirements.
