This 1989 Toyota Hiace LH85 is a former fire truck imported to Calgary, Canada in 2008. It is in excellent condition and has zero rust. After fourteen years of dependable service, David has restored it and now wants to replace the diesel engine with an electric motor. He is looking for training, support and the best drive train and battery setup. He wants to do the conversion himself, in his own shop.

This late 80's “High Ace” is powered by a 2.4L 4 cylinder diesel engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission and 4wd with a transfer case with high/low ranges. It weighs 3,700 lbs. and is equipped with disc brakes at the front, drums on the rear and Power steering. It does not have AC or Air Bags.

David bought this double cab with less than 9,000 miles on the clock (14,000 km). Since then, he has added 40,000 miles and has restored it from head to toe with a custom service body, new brakes, a new clutch and a new rear air bag suspension.

After converting it to electric, he expects his Toyota Hiace to reach a top speed of 70 mph with a range of 150 miles. He will charge it from home overnight and will use it daily for city rides.

Keeping the 4x4 is imperative. He has no motor or battery preference but expects the van to be a bit more powerful than today, targeting 100-150 horsepower, and 200-250 Lb-ft of torque. He wants to use as many used EV parts as possible.

For gauges and instrumentation, the modification of the Dash will be straightforward according to David.  The existing gauge cluster can be easily removed and replaced with an aluminum dash or mounts for a screen.

David would also like to haul 3,500 lbs worth of fret for a short distance.

Sounds like a great project. The Doka, is a personal favorite, but the size and weight of your project, has my attention.
I am building a plan for a Toyota Hiace. Any updates to your project? has Fuel2Electric been useful?
